Former President Donald Trump has expressed discontent with the Secret Service regarding their response to a supposed assassination attempt during a campaign event in Ohio. This account was revealed during an interview with Fox News’ Jesse Watters, where Trump discussed the incident involving the arrest and charging of Thomas Matthew Crooks for his alleged attempt to assassinate him.
The Secret Service reported that Crooks was apprehended by agents as he approached the stage where Trump was speaking. Despite this, Trump questioned the efficiency of the security measures in place, wondering aloud how Crooks managed to get so close to him.
“They are wonderful, talented individuals,” Trump remarked about the Secret Service, “but it puzzles me, how did this individual manage to come so near?”
Although Trump acknowledged the prompt response from the Secret Service, he voiced concerns over safeguarding against similar events in the future. “I appreciate the Secret Service and their swift action, however, we must enhance our precautions to ensure this never recurs,” he commented.
Following this, Crooks faces charges not only for attempting to assassinate the former President but also for issuing threats against a former President of the United States. He remains in custody awaiting a court hearing.
The incident has sparked debate concerning the security measures at Trump’s campaign events, prompting him to call for more rigorous protections for both himself and his followers. Trump stated, “It’s crucial that we treat this seriously and equip ourselves with the highest security measures. I cherish my supporters and want to ensure their safety.”
To date, there has been no public response from the Secret Service to Trump’s criticism regarding the incident’s management.
