After a father interrupted a graduation ceremony in Wisconsin to apologize for his daughter’s absence, Superintendent Lori Mueller of the Baraboo School District has publicly addressed the situation. The interruption occurred at Baraboo High School’s graduation on June 5th, where the father intervened during the principal’s speech.
Superintendent Mueller expressed her commitment to providing a supportive environment for all students, emphasizing the importance of celebrating their achievements respectfully. “Our mission focuses on preparing students for their future, and part of that is ensuring they can celebrate their milestones positively and respectfully,” stated Mueller.
The controversy began when Megan Pals was unable to attend her graduation due to a family emergency, prompting her father, Michael Pals, to seize a moment during the ceremony to apologize on her behalf. This act, however, went against the school policy that designates the principal as the sole speaker at such events.
Acknowledging the emotions that come with graduation, Mueller reiterated the district’s policy and the reasons behind it. “While we recognize the strong emotions during such events and appreciate the support families wish to show, we maintain that the principal is the only one to address the assembly to preserve the dignity and flow of the ceremony,” she explained.
In her statement, Mueller also addressed the father’s interruption, underscading that while the intent might have been in good spirit, the approach was not in line with school protocols. “We do not approve of the method by which the father chose to express his apology, as it disrupts the experience we strive to provide for our students and their families.”
Mueller also extended an apology to those affected by the disturbance and reassured the commitment to uphold a dignified graduation experience. “We apologize to our students and families for the disruption and assure them that we are dedicated to fostering a positive environment for our ceremonies,” she affirmed.
Following the event, Michael Pals posted an apology on social media, expressing regret over his actions and his commitment to rectify the situation. “I sincerely regret my actions that detracted from the students’ achievements. I have apologized to the school district and am prepared to face any consequences to resolve the matter,” he shared.
