In a touching disclosure, Patti Scialfa, renowned as Bruce Springsteen’s spouse, has openly shared her ongoing six-year fight against blood cancer. This brave announcement was made during a new documentary titled “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” unveiled at the Toronto International Film Festival.
During the time of her husband’s “Springsteen on Broadway” residency, Scialfa was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a less common form of cancer that develops in plasma cells, a variety of white blood cell. This diagnosis has profoundly influenced her life and notably altered her role as a performer with the E Street Band.
In the documentary, Scialfa spoke about the challenges of touring, highlighting how multiple myeloma has affected her immune system. She noted the necessity of vigilance in her daily activities and travel choices, stating, “Touring has become a challenge for me. This affects my immune system, so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go.”
However, Scialfa continues to engage with music, albeit in a modified capacity. She occasionally joins shows and performs a few songs, an experience she cherishes as a “treat.” This adaptation shows her resilience and commitment to her craft despite health hurdles.
The E Street Band’s ongoing tour kicked off in February 2023 and is scheduled to wrap up in July 2025. Scialfa’s ability to juggle her health concerns with her musical passion stands as a powerful example of her tenacity and dedication.
Beyond her musical career and health battles, Scialfa stays occupied with personal projects and family responsibilities. She has been working on a solo album and also actively participates in the life of her first grandchild, Lily, born to her son Sam in July 2022.
Scialfa’s candidness about her struggle with multiple myeloma is inspiring many, bringing to light the significance of support and awareness for those fighting rare cancers. Her journey illustrates the challenges of managing a serious, chronic condition while continuing to pursue one’s passions and commitments.
