Jordin Sparks, who clinched the title in the sixth season of “American Idol,” recently voiced her concerns regarding Katy Perry’s fit as a new judge on the show’s panel.

In a conversation with Entertainment Listener, Sparks disclosed her skepticism about Perry’s capacity to effectively bond with participants and offer valuable feedback. “Katy Perry is an exceptional artist, but her skills as a judge might not be on the same level,” Sparks remarked. She further elaborated on the complexities of transitioning from performer to critic, emphasizing the necessity for a balance between constructive feedback and encouragement, a balance she feels Perry may not have mastered yet.

Appointed as a judge on the reformatted “American Idol” in May 2017, Perry joined the lineup along with Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan when the show began airing its 16th season in March 2018 on ABC.

Having been a guest judge herself, Sparks also reflected on what qualities are crucial in a judge from the perspective of a contestant. She stressed the importance of experiential insight, constructive critique, and motivational support to help nurture a contestant’s growth as a performer.

Despite her reservations about Perry’s judging capabilities, Sparks is optimistic about the revival of “American American Idol” and its potential to cultivate new talent. “I’m eager to see the new direction they take the show in and optimistic about its continued success,” she concluded.
