Diondre Overton, a former standout wide receiver for the Clemson football team, has died following a shooting incident early Saturday morning in Greensboro, North Carolina. The event occurred around 2:30 AM.

The local sheriff’s office reported that deputies were dispatched following reports of a disturbance and discovered a man who had been shot. The victim was identified as Overton and, despite emergency responders’ efforts to save him, he was declared dead at the location of the incident.

The Clemson community and its football program have expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Overton. The team officially recognized his demise and expressed their deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Personal tributes from his former teammates were shared, including a poignant homage by Tee Higgins, a receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, on social media.

During his tenure from 2016 to 2019 at Clemson, Overton made significant contributions to the team, securing 52 receptions for 777 yards and scoring seven touchdowns. He played a crucial role in earning national championship titles for the team in 2016 and 2018. In honor of his leadership, his name is commemorated on a plaque outside the stadium from his time as co-captain in his final year.

Overton was only 26 years old at his time of death. His legacy at Clemson remains impactful, and the football program continues to extend its support to his family during this sorrowful period.
